Welcome to Remsenburg

Remsenburg’s real estate is highlighted by many homes on the waterfront or featuring waterfront views of scenic Moriches Bay. There are also many picturesque homes inland that often contain large gardens, many with swimming pools and tennis courts on expansive parcels of land.

Remsenburg is a quiet community of tree-lined streets with gracious country homes and quaint cottages along Moriches Bay and its inlets, with several bay beaches and a 135-slip marina. The hamlet is overwhelmingly residential. Farms, stables, and vegetable gardens are a common sight surrounding traditional homes both large and small. Restaurants and nightlife are all are easily accessible in nearby Westhampton Beach. Recreational opportunities for swimming, sailing, fishing, tennis, and cycling abound.

In 1895 the residents of this lovely headland on Moriches Bay decided to name the hamlet Remsenburg, in recognition of prominent resident Charles Remsen, who had donated a new Presbyterian Church. Decidedly serene, Remsenburg is a particularly community-minded hamlet, with several organizations dedicated to retaining its bucolic charm, including The Speonk Remsenburg Civic Association, and The Remsenburg Association, open to all residents, which also runs the Remsenburg Academy & Art Gallery that houses a library, and is used for meetings, social events, lectures and fine art exhibits throughout the year. Also, an integral part of the community is the Remsenburg-Speonk School District.

Also in Remsenburg is the Westhampton Yacht Squadron, a privately owned sailing and social club on Moriches Bay. The Club bustles with activity during the summer months when the calendar is full with sailing, swimming, and tennis lessons, races, and special events. In the off-season, it is a quiet haven, where members congregate on Friday nights for dinner, an Irish coffee, and conversations around a roaring fireplace.

It is often noted as the home to British humorist P.G. Wodehouse, who created many of his immortal stories about the character Jeeves while living and writing in Remsenberg. Other residents of note include: songwriter Frank Loesser, who wrote for Broadway shows including Guys and Dolls; the playwright, Guy Bolton, who collaborated with Wodehouse on Anything Goes; and Dave Garroway, the original host of NBC's Today Show.

As Remsenburg is a hamlet located within the Town of Southampton and is on the Atlantic Ocean and Moriches Bay, it is considered to be geographically, historically, and culturally part of the Hamptons.
